Gay Lesbian International Therapist Search Engine "GLITSE" The GLITSE search engine began because the 1-800-THERAPIST International Therapist Referral Service was compiling names of therapists who specialized in Gay and lesbian issues for its own referrals. We decided we wanted to make this information available to the public and have a place to come for those searching for help with these issues to meet those who specialize in working with these issues.
Special acknowledgement to the 1-800-THERAPIST Network. About the 1-800-THERAPIST Network: 1-800-THERAPIST, was created to fill an important community need, that of providing prompt, confidential information to individual callers needing help with their mental health problems. This program provides referrals to licensed professional mental health practitioners for people of all ages who need assistance with a wide range of mental health problems. It also offers general information to the public about different mental health disciplines and types of care. The referral programs are offered without charge by a group of mental health professionals as a public service. People who want mental health information or need a referral to a therapist contact 1-800-THERAPIST by phone. The caller speaks with a referral resource counselor who has the knowledge and training to assist the caller in ascertaining the type of specialist needed. The counselor talks with the caller to mutually identify the caller's problem, their geographical area, income, preference for male or female therapist and any other special considerations. These are assessed to ensure the referral is appropriate and will be successful for the therapist and patient. The caller may be offered a referral to more than one therapist, if appropriate. The caller and the therapist then arrange an appointment time and work out an agreeable fee. There is no charge for general information or for a referral. Therapists in the service have a sliding scale arrangement which can accommodate people of varying income levels. 1-800-THERAPIST is familiar with the fee schedules and other pertinent details of the member therapists. This information and the caller's income are taken into consideration when making a referral. When appropriate, some clients are referred to agencies that are set up to assist the financially disabled. 1-800-THERAPIST is able to link callers with professionals who provide individual, conjoint, family, and group treatment for problems such as, marital difficulties, parent child conflict, developmental difficulties of childhood and adolescence, alcohol and drug abuse, eating disorders, domestic violence, child abuse, sexual problems, depression, anxiety, bereavement, sleep disorders, and work or school difficulties. 1-800-THERAPIST also refers for psychological testing, neurological evaluations, hospitalization, medication evaluations and for specific types of treatment, such as pain or stress management, hypnosis, biofeedback, psychodrama and art therapy. If an agency can fit a client's needs better than a private practitioner, the service will refer to local agencies. The program can assist people who are in crisis and need immediate help as well as those with less urgent needs. 1-800-THERAPIST is supremely concerned and careful about the quality of treatment provided both by the therapists and the 1-800-THERAPIST referral counselors. The director at 1-800-THERAPIST screens therapists who wish to receive referrals, provides phone consultations with the therapists as needed, and provides supervision of the referral counselors on a daily basis. In order to continually improve the quality of service, the member therapists meet on a regular basis to discuss issues relating to the needs of the community and the therapist. Periodic follow-ups are done to verify the appropriateness of the referrals and the overall satisfaction of the participants. Mental health professionals that are in private practice and are interested in affiliating with this service must be licensed and experienced in their field, and are required to have malpractice insurance. They must also document their areas of expertise and must be recommended by other professionals. They need to have an area of expertise that augments what the program already offers. Persons who wish to apply for membership in the service must speak to the Qualifications Director to verify they meet the basic criteria. An application and additional information is mailed to them. Upon return, a personal interview is scheduled before acceptance. Psychiatrists, psychologists, marriage and family counselors, clinical social workers and psychiatric nurses may apply. The therapists in 1- 800-THERAPIST are re-certified annually by the Executive Committee of 1-800-THERAPIST. Your local 1-800-THERAPIST network is actually a part of a larger, international referral system of mental health professionals. So if you need to find an expert in a particular field anywhere in the United States or Canada, then 1-800-THERAPIST is the place to call. 1-800-843-7274. http://www.1-800-therapist.com |
